CSS Picture Frame

June 30, 2004

Although I haven't reserved much time for it lately, I love experimenting with css and trying to come up with new personal techniques to add to my bag of webdesign tricks. Usually this involves coming up with an idea, checking to see if it has been done, and trying to do it better. I'm a big fan of alistapart, as it's a community of people who have the same mindset. This time however, I decided to just wing it.

I really wanted to create a border inside an image as a decorative overlaying frame for the image.

The technique involves 2 <div>s. The first <div> is a container that I give the class picturebox. Picturebox has a background-image that I wish to display, an outer border to seperate it from the page, and padding defined in the css.

.picturebox {
	background-image:url(pontevecchio.jpg);
	background-repeat: no-repeat;
	border: 1px solid #000000;
	padding:9px;
	width: 620px;
}

The second <div> is actually the frame overlay that I want to put on the image, which I lovingly refer to as the framebox.

.framebox {
	border: 5px double #FFFFFF;
	height:440px;
	position:relative;
}

With the picturebox and the framebox classes defined the html is stupidsimple:

   <div class="picturebox">
<div class="framebox"></div>
</div>

And Viola!, a nice little css picture frame. I know there are probably other ways of doing this, but this seemed to work for me.

MovableType vs WordPress

June 29, 2004

From a designer standpoint, the decision of which content management system to use is very clear. Nearly every one of my regular reads have movable type embroidered into their underwear. Lets face it, Movable Type is to Webdesigners what Apple is to Print Designers (and a lot of webdesigners as well).

There aren't many other popular options out there. If you're not in bed with MT then you are either programming your own database driven catastrophe, or using WordPress. Well, I'm about done trying to develop in my own time, all of the features offered by real content management systems. Although I like the challenges that programming bring me, I AM NOT a programmer by trade. The only reason I even consider the option of WordPress is that it is the chosen backbone of Eric Meyer's website. Sure, there are lots of people out there using WordPress - but as a designer, I go by what I see - and the Word Press fans out there aren't doing a great job of convincing my eyes...

Different Kind of Moving

June 21, 2004

Now that Amy and I have moved (so...sore), I think it's time for me to start planning the migration of Jasongraphix to a new webhost and a new look. This site is in dire need of a complete re-build and my webhost - well they're just getting old. It has been almost a year since I gradjidated and started work as a full time web monkey, and since that time, the only upgrades that I have made revolve around this blog. No major graphical changes, no cutting-edge uber cool cssness, and no changes to the way my portfolio is viewed. Just a little bit of php coding and database planning - and I'm a webdesigner, not a programmer for cryin out loud!

I have plenty of ideas, inspiration, and motivation. Ideas for improvement include implementing rss, trackbacks, a better inline commenting system, and a simpler method of displaying my portfolio. To save time on the programming features (and give more time for stylage) I'm going to look into using Moveable Type as my blog engine. I want to start sharing my knowledge with how-to's and downloads, not only for the public, but for my own memory as well. Seeing and reading sites like mikeindustries.com, jasonsantamaria.com, airbagindustries.com, stopdesign.com, and alistapart.com (just to name a few) provide more than enough inspiration. Motivation comes mostly from my own personal desire to make cool stuff, but the fact that I'll be moving in less than a year - sending out my website to hordes of potential employers doesn't hurt either.

Moving...

June 17, 2004

Yesterday started out with much anticipation and excitement as we signed our lease and picked up our new keys. Those feelings continued all through the work day, after which we went to the new place and worked until about 12:30 last night cleaning and building a couple new furniture items.

This morning, Amy took off for work at about 7:40AM as usual, and I felt compelled to do more moving, so I loaded up the futon frame that we retrieved from a dumpster, and a few other boxes and took a load to the new place before heading to work. Tonight we're taking a short break to go to the first meeting of an intramural softball league that we're planning on joining... and then it's back to moving! Phew! :)

Sprint Happiness

June 10, 2004

I keep looking over at the cell phone on my desk and laughing. "HA! 3 BARS!!!" and then a few minutes later, I look over again out of curiosity. "HAHA! Still 3 Bars!" Although, I think my workmates may be getting a little worried about my mental stability, I know that Russ understands what I'm so happy about - he has Sprint too.

Overall, I have been very happy with my Sprint cellular plan. Sure, Gainesville has fairly patchy coverage, but having a $30/mo. plan that allows me enough minutes, free nights and weekends, and the ability to talk to my wife for free with the PCS to PCS make it worthwhile. Even despite the patchy coverage, I've been able to use my phone almost everywhere - except at work.

Whenever I got within 200 yards of work, my service dropped to 1 bar, and once in the parking lot I could barely carry a conversation without dropping a call. Service in the building? Forget it!

As of today however, it seems that Sprint must have set up a new tower nearby, because... "HA! 3 Bars! YEAAAA!" No more missed calls, no more dead phone, no more leaving it attached to my car charger all day!

Selling NES Games

June 09, 2004

Amy and I have begun the arduous process of packing all of our belongings into boxes for our move to Maguire Village. We're starting to realize that we have a lot of "stuff" lying around. You know what I mean - the decorative fountain/light that never gets turned on and doesn't have any water in it should we decided to turn it on, the "other" entertainment center that we had planned to sell but never really attempted to, and the things that live in the utility closet - Ay! The utility closet!

In a small attempt to reduce the mass that we must transport to our next home (and to reduce the cost of said transport), I have listed all of my Nintendo stuff on Ebay. Up for grabs are 26 Games, 1 Gray Zapper, and a Nintendo RF Switch.

It's on the ebay description, but For future reference, I'll post the list of games below:

  • Dr. Mario
  • Ghosts 'n Goblins
  • GI Joe
  • Golf Power Greg Norman

Sushi from Publix

June 02, 2004

The post below is over a year old, but somehow I get at least one person per 24 hours that ends up here by Googling for something related to Sushi and Publix. Comments on this post were never enabled since it’s so old. I actually don’t even live in Florida anymore, but fortunately I’m still close to my favorite grocery store and still enjoy Publix Sushi from time to time.

So what’s your excuse? Why are you here? I have to know WHY you are all searching for Publix Sushi, Sushi from Publix and Publix Sushi Department. Does Publix Sushi make you happy too? Are you curious about Publix Sushi but haven’t tried it yet? Is this the Publix PR department trying to find out what people are saying about their products? If that last answer is yes, please send me a Publix Gift card… Otherwise, you’ve got some ‘splainin’ to do. Comments are now open.

Update (1/16/06):

From the comments so far it looks like most of you are looking for the nutritional facts on Publix Sushi. I thought about asking for them at the store, but I decided to do a little research first. I remembered that the branding on all of the sushi is “Southern Tsunami” so I checked, and sure enough, they have a website: http://www.afcsushi.com

The Southern Tsunami website could use some work, but they do have a nutrition chart. Now I know that my Dragon Roll tray has 508 calories and 18g of fat. Not too bad compared to a Joey Bag of Donuts from Moes at 1121 calories and 29g of fat. But…not great compared to a 6 inch sweet onion chicken teriyaki from subway at 370 calories with only 5g of fat. Anyway, hope that research was helpful.

For those of you wondering how to make sushi, my friend Adrian posted a Sushi Tutorial on her site. (As seen in the comments below.) I still haven’t tried her tutorial yet but I did buy a “MAGIC julienne slicer” already and hope to get to it one of these days.

The original post:

Publix is the best grocery store EVER! Sure, other grocery stores are ok - except for maybe Win Dixie, but if the choice is available, I go to Publix. They always have the cleanest stores, the freshest produce, and the best selection of regular products. Some stores like Walmart Supercenters (which don’t exist here in Gainesville) can beat Publix prices, but when it comes to shopping experience, you get what you pay for.

I guess I’m on this little advertising rant because I’m on my lunch break enjoying my tray of fresh spicy rolls from the sushi department. MMmm. What other grocery store has a fresh sushi section? The only thing I’m not so sure of is if rice is on the diet that Amy and I are on.
