Book Baton

Just when I thought we were done with this whole meme thing for 2005, I get hit with another one from Marko. Thanks buddy, thanks a lot! You know, in order to stop these things, somebody has to refuse to do it. That is the only way…amputate the branch before it becomes a trunk. (Pardon my nerdy anology…I was up way too late last night, and I’m working on nested code this morning.) I would take my own advice, but doing so would suggest that I don’t listen to music and don’t read books. So…in an effort to not come off as an uncultured, illiterate jerk…I’ll keep the Baton moving.

Number of Books…in Boxes

All of our shelves have been dismantled and packed up for the move, and all of our books are in boxes. My best guess is that we have 5 or 6 boxes worth, or about 3 tons.

Well, most of our books are in boxes right now…but I’ve been reading a lot of Mastering 3ds Max 4 (co-authored by Chris Murray, one of my college professors) - Yes, it’s old, but I needed to brush up on some things for a 3d project that Amy and I have been trying to wrap up.

The Bible…and Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. Even though Tycho (Penny-Arcade) had a field day bashing this book when he received it as a Christmas present from his mom, it had a pretty profound influence on my life when I was in college.

I think everybody's blogs are acting funny because we all just switched to Dreamhost and haven't finished setting permissions on things. :) I was trying to get rid of a few comment spams earlier today and MT Blacklist still isn't working right, so I was weeding them out by hand and accidently deleted your comment. Not a great excuse, but I did realize that it was your comment just as I hit the confirm delete button. Sorry Dustin.

Since you mentioned backups, I hadn't backed up my Movable Type database in a while, and the thing has grown to almost 12MB. Of course, when I gzipped it, it compresses to about 1MB, but 12MB is a lot of text data.

12MB doesn't mean it literally is 12MBs of data. There is probably a lot of loose ends when you delete comments (rows) in your database, which take up disk space even though there is nothing really there.

I kept clicking backward from each persons book baton post and it this person was the only to confess that it wasn't passed onto them, but rather "A proposal". Funny because it was only a matter of 4 days on how fast it got to me.

Hey, I'm looking at this in Firefox 1.5 RC2 on WinXP and the headlines are not present. I can take a screenshot if you want. I know this worked before you switched styles, but I also know I've formatted and switched browsers since then. Am I missing something, or did something get overlooked when you rebooted?

Weird. I hadn't referenced h5 tags anywhere else in my css, but somehow I toggled the visibility of all of them...somewhere. After a few expletive words and tinkering with font-size, background-color, display, z-index... I found that visibility:visible; did the trick. Whodathunk.

Strangest thing... I know that this book baton is old but I just bought the same two books you stated in the first paragraph:

That's crazy. I even bought both of those at the same time. I'm currently trying to finish up CS Lewis' The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe with my wife before the movie comes out.
