View Link Background Image

...is a very simple Firefox extension created by Jason Beaird & James Booker that allows you to view the background images of links by right-clicking on them just as you would with most other HTML elements. Why? Read the full story behind it.

Install the View Link Background Image Extension Current Version: 2.0 (12/29/2011) //thanks @mariafray

Try it out

After installing the extension, restart Firefox, return to this page and right-click on each of the white link blocks below.

  1. On the first one, you should see a new context menu item called
    "View Link Background Image".
  2. The second square looks identical, but the background image is on the list item and not the link itself. If the extension doesn't find a background-image on the link, it will check for a background-image on the parent element. If there is one, it will return that image when you click "View Parent Background Image".
  3. The third square doesn't have a background image on the link, nor on it's parent list item. Therefore the "View Link Background Image" context menu item is disabled.
  4. New: Firefox 3.6+ supports multiple background images and now this plugin does too. The same context menu items will show up when you right-click on the 4th & 5th boxes, but when you click them, they'll open all background images applied to the selected element.

The examples below will only work with Firefox 3.6+
